Whoa--when did Serbia get into this?!

For the past couple of days, our class has been going over the things that Serbia did back in the day that caused even more tension throughout Europe. They started getting involved when Russia was looking for some land that they could use to put their battleships on, which was Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Austria-Hungary found out about it. When Austria-Hungary found out about Russia's plan, right away they took Bosnia and decided to keep it to themselves because they didn't want some other country to take it from them. Serbia originally wanted land from Bosnia and so they were like, "Oh no they didn't!" Eventually tension arose between those countries, especially Serbia and Austria-Hungary. Serbia even threatned war to Austira-Hungary, hoping they would get back Bosnia. Both nations pretty much became allies with each other (Serbia with Russia and Austria-Hungary with Germany) and mobilized their militaries. Lucky for them though, Russia chickened out, which left Serbia ticked off.
Several years later, the Balkan states and the Turkish people got into a war that resulted in the Balkan folk kicking Turkey out of that area. Because Austria-Hungary got involved, they forced Serbia to give up some of their land. Tension between the two of them was always high!
Now you have Franz Ferdinand, who's part of the Austro-Hungarian Army, being invited by General Oskar Potiorek to visit Bosnia. When word spread out, crazy stuff was being planned...
Dragutin Dimitrijevic, leader of the Black Hand, felt that Ferdinand was going to be a threat to the union between Bosnia & Serbia, so he decided to come up with a plan to assassinate him. Him and a few other of his comrades were chosen to do the job and were somewhat successful. One of the guys, Gavrilo Princip, finally shot Franz Ferdinand and his wife and the two of them ended up dying. How sad...

I'm just wondering why all of that chaos even got started. If Serbia and Bosnia were going to unite together, why did Dimitrijevic then create a plan to kill the archduke?? Why wouldn't he just let him be?

  1. Its a great question. I think that he speculated that Franz Ferdinand was going to give into some of the demands of the Slavs in Bosnia, thus making it more difficult for the Serbs to incorporate B-H (eventually) into their empire. This is a great post Ariel; very insightful! Plus, I like it when you said, "Oh no you didn't!"
